Every developer has wanted to show a local project to a colleague or test a webhook without deploying anything. The usual answers are port forwarding on a home router, which is fiddly and insecure, or a temporary tunnel service with a random address that changes every session. Cloudflare Tunnel offers a better option: a free, secure way to expose a local service on a stable address, without opening any inbound ports on your network.

A tunnel reverses the usual direction of connection. Instead of the internet connecting in to your machine, a small daemon on your machine connects out to Cloudflare's network and holds that connection open. Cloudflare then routes requests for your chosen hostname through that outbound connection to your local service. Because nothing listens for inbound connections on your side, there is no open port for scanners to find, and your home or office IP address stays hidden.

Setup takes about fifteen minutes. First, add your domain to Cloudflare's free plan and point its nameservers as instructed. Second, install the cloudflared daemon on the machine running your service. Third, authenticate it and create a tunnel, which produces a credentials file. Fourth, write a short configuration file naming the hostname and the local address to forward to, such as localhost on port 3000, then start the daemon. Visiting the hostname should now show your local app, served over HTTPS with a certificate Cloudflare manages for you.

Tunnels are useful for demos, webhook testing, and personal services, but they deserve the same care as any public exposure. Put authentication in front of anything that is not meant for the public, using Cloudflare Access or your app's own login. Avoid exposing databases, admin panels, or file shares directly; those should stay reachable only through a private network or VPN. And remember that the tunnel makes your app public, not private: anything on the forwarded port is now reachable by anyone who knows the address.

A tunnel is not a hosting solution. It depends on your machine staying on and connected, so it is wrong for anything that must be available around the clock. For production services, deploy to a server or a platform built for uptime. But for development, demos, and testing, a tunnel removes an entire category of friction: no router configuration, no dynamic DNS, no expiring addresses, and no open ports. It is one of the few free tools that is genuinely simpler than the workaround it replaces.

Try it with a small project this week. Expose a local app, test a webhook end to end, and share a stable link with a colleague. Once you have used a tunnel, the old routine of port forwarding and temporary links feels like sending a letter by hand. Keep the tunnel for development, keep production on real hosting, and enjoy the fact that showing your work no longer requires deploying it first.

For a tunnel you use daily, running it by hand in a terminal is annoying and fragile: it dies when the terminal closes and does not restart after a reboot. Install it as a system service instead, so it starts automatically and restarts on failure. The daemon's own install command can create the service for you, and your configuration file stays in one place where you can edit it later. This turns a demo trick into a reliable part of your development setup, and it means a colleague's link keeps working even after you restart your machine.

Also keep separate tunnels for separate purposes. One tunnel for demos, one for webhook testing, and one for personal services keeps permissions and hostnames tidy and lets you revoke one without breaking the others. Name each tunnel clearly and document its hostname and target port in your project's notes. A tunnel setup that only exists in one person's memory is a setup that breaks the week that person is away, so write it down while it is fresh.
