Cloud costs are one of the first real expenses a startup faces, and AWS Activate exists to remove that barrier for early-stage teams. The program provides cloud credits, technical support, and training resources, and it is divided into tiers based on your startup's stage and connections. The Founders tier is the one most small teams can access directly, because it does not require an accelerator or investor connection, only a real company and a real project.
To qualify for the Founders tier, you generally need a functioning company website, a completed AWS account, and a clear description of what you are building. The program is aimed at bootstrapped, early-stage startups that are not yet affiliated with an institutional investor or major accelerator. If your startup is backed by a venture firm or accelerator that partners with AWS, you may instead qualify for the higher Portfolio tier, which offers substantially larger credits.
The Founders tier credits are modest compared with the Portfolio tier, but they are meaningful for a small team: enough to run a small production workload, a staging environment, and the supporting services for a year, if you architect carefully. The credits are valid for a limited period, typically one year, so the clock starts when you receive them, and planning your architecture around the free tier services that remain free after credits expire will prevent a billing shock later.
Applying is straightforward. Create an AWS account, build a simple company website if you do not already have one, and complete the Activate application with an honest description of your product, your team, and your stage. Applications are reviewed, and approval is not guaranteed, but a clear, specific application from a real startup with a working website stands a strong chance. Vague applications that read like an idea rather than a project are the ones most likely to be declined.
Once approved, use the credits strategically rather than burning them on oversized resources. Start with the free tier services that will stay free after the credits end, such as small compute instances, limited storage, and serverless functions, and use credits for the parts that actually need scale, such as a larger database during testing or a burst of compute for a launch. Set billing alerts from day one, and review usage monthly, so you always know how much credit remains and when it expires.
Startup credit programs from other providers work similarly, and many startups combine them: Google Cloud and Microsoft both run startup programs with their own credit tiers and eligibility rules. There is nothing wrong with using more than one provider's program for different projects, but avoid splitting a single project across providers just to chase credits, since the operational complexity usually costs more than the credits save.
Treat AWS Activate as runway, not as free money. The credits buy you time to build, test, and find customers without cloud bills, and the best use of that time is reaching revenue or a funding milestone before the credits run out. Apply early, architect cheaply, monitor usage monthly, and have a plan for the day the credits expire, so that day is a routine transition rather than a crisis.
Beyond the credits themselves, AWS Activate includes technical support and training resources that many founders underuse. The support channel can answer architecture questions that would otherwise take hours of forum searching, and the training credits can upskill a small team on services you plan to use heavily. Take advantage of both early, while your architecture is still flexible, because advice received before you build is worth far more than advice received after you have to refactor. Also note that Activate benefits sometimes include third-party offers, such as discounted tools or services from partner companies, which can further stretch a startup's runway. Review the full benefits list when you are accepted, not just the credit amount, so you claim everything the program offers before any of it expires.
