Startup programmes from the major cloud providers offer credits that can cover months or even years of hosting, and for an early-stage team that support can be the difference between launching and waiting. Free cloud credits for startups are not charity, they are an investment by providers in future customers, which is why they come with eligibility rules, expiry dates and expectations about how the credits are used. Understanding those terms before you apply is what separates a programme that genuinely helps from one that leaves you with a large bill the month the credits run out.

Most programmes ask for basic company details, a description of what you are building, and sometimes a referral from an investor, accelerator or partner organisation, with larger credit amounts tied to funding stage or partner endorsement. Prepare a short, honest description of your product, your expected infrastructure needs and your team, since reviewers see many applications and vague claims stand out for the wrong reasons. Apply when you have something to build, not months before, because credits usually start expiring from approval, and credits wasted on an idle account are credits unavailable when you actually launch. If you are eligible for more than one provider, compare the credit amount, the validity period and whether support or training is included.

Read the expiry terms carefully, including whether credits apply to all services or only selected ones, and whether unused credits roll over. Design your architecture to survive the end of credits by tracking what your full bill would be without them, using billing reports that show costs before credits are applied. Avoid building on expensive managed services you cannot afford afterwards, unless you have a clear plan to pay for them or replace them, since the most painful outcome is a product that only works at a subsidised price. Set a calendar reminder for three months before expiry, so you have time to optimise, negotiate or migrate rather than discovering the cliff in the final week.

Use credits to learn and to launch, not to postpone thinking about costs. Run load tests, try managed services you are considering for production, and measure what each part of your system would cost at full price, so your pricing and fundraising plans reflect reality. Keep spending disciplined even while credits cover the bill, because habits formed during the free period tend to persist, and a team that monitors costs from day one rarely faces a crisis when credits end. Credits are a runway extension, not a business model, and the startups that benefit most are those that treat the end of credits as a known milestone in their plan, not as a surprise.

Before committing, write down the decision and why you made it: the option chosen, the alternative rejected, and the condition that would make you reconsider. That note takes two minutes and it prevents the most common side-project regret, which is not choosing wrong, but forgetting why you chose and rebuilding the same decision from scratch months later. Revisit the note when traffic, budget or available time changes, since any of those can legitimately change the right answer, and a decision revisited deliberately is far better than one drifted into by inertia.

If you remember one thing from this guide, make it the habit behind the advice: check your bill, delete what you no longer use, and set an alert before you need one. Cloud platforms reward attention far more than expertise, and a beginner who reviews costs monthly will usually spend less than an expert who never looks.
