Oracle Cloud's Always Free tier stands out in a market full of expiring trials, because its core resources genuinely do not expire: ARM-based compute instances, a generous memory allocation, and block storage that remain free as long as your account stays active. For a small website, a personal project, or a learning server, it is the closest thing to a free permanent VPS that a major cloud provider offers. The catch is that the setup process is enterprise-oriented, and beginners often stall at the first steps.

Account creation is the first hurdle. You will need an email address, a phone number for verification, and a credit or debit card, which Oracle uses for identity verification rather than charging. The card requirement surprises people who expected a no-card free tier, but no charge is made for Always Free resources, and you can set billing alerts to confirm that. Choose your home region carefully during signup, because Always Free resources are only available in certain regions, and the region choice is difficult to change later.

Once the account is active, create a compartment and a virtual cloud network before launching anything, since Oracle's networking model expects you to define the network first. Then launch an ARM-based Ampere instance, choosing the Always Free eligible shape, and attach it to your network with a public IP. The free allowance covers a meaningful amount of CPU and memory across your instances, so a single instance with a few cores and several gigabytes of memory fits comfortably inside it for most small projects.

Security setup comes next and should not be skipped. Oracle instances use SSH key authentication, so generate a key pair during instance creation and keep the private key safe. Open only the ports your project needs in the security list, typically port 22 for SSH from your IP, plus 80 and 443 for a website, and close everything else. A fresh cloud server is scanned by automated bots within hours of going online, so default passwords and open ports are a real risk, not a theoretical one.

After the instance is running, the setup is standard Linux server work: update packages, install a web server or your application runtime, configure a firewall on the instance itself, and point your domain to the public IP. Because the instance is ARM-based, check that any software you install offers ARM builds, since most popular tools do, but a few older packages may only ship x86 versions. Docker makes this easier, since many images publish ARM variants alongside x86 ones.

Two maintenance habits keep the free server healthy. First, set a billing alert at a tiny threshold so any accidental use of a paid resource notifies you immediately, rather than appearing on a bill weeks later. Second, back up your important data off the instance regularly, since Always Free resources, while permanent in principle, are still subject to the provider's terms and to the small risk of account issues. A weekly backup to object storage or to your own machine covers both cases.

With those steps done, you have a free server that can host a website, run scheduled jobs, serve an API, or act as a learning lab, with no monthly cost and no expiry countdown. The setup takes an afternoon the first time and under an hour once you know the console, and for small projects it removes hosting cost from the equation entirely, leaving you free to focus on building.

One detail that catches new Oracle Cloud users is the idle-instance reclamation policy that can apply to some always-free resources, where instances that sit unused for an extended period may be stopped or reclaimed. Running a lightweight regular task, such as a small website with occasional traffic or a scheduled job, usually keeps an instance active, and monitoring your instance status weekly lets you catch any stoppage early. Also keep an eye on the always-free resource limits across all your instances combined, since creating a second instance without checking the total can push you over the allowance and trigger charges. A quick monthly check of your usage against the always-free limits, plus a billing alert, keeps the setup genuinely free and avoids the surprise of an instance disappearing at an inconvenient moment.
