Open a typical small website and check what takes the longest to load, and the answer is almost always images. A few uncompressed photos can outweigh the entire rest of the page, and on a slow mobile connection that means visitors waiting, bouncing, and never coming back. Search engines notice too, because page speed affects rankings and user experience alike.

The good news is that image optimisation is one of the highest-return, lowest-cost improvements a small site can make. Modern formats, sensible sizing, and free tools can cut image weight by half or more, with no paid service required and no visible loss of quality.

The single biggest win is serving images at the size they are actually displayed. A photo uploaded at four thousand pixels wide and shown at eight hundred is wasting most of its bytes. Resize images to the largest size your layout uses, plus a little headroom for high-resolution screens, and the savings are immediate.

Next, use a modern format. Formats designed for the web compress photos far better than older ones while looking identical to visitors. Most browsers now support them, and a simple fallback keeps older browsers working. Converting your largest images alone often halves a page's total weight.

Free command-line tools can compress and convert whole folders of images in one pass, and many static site generators and content systems have plugins that automate this at build time. Set the process up once, and every future image gets optimised automatically, which is the only way the habit survives a busy week.

For sites that cannot change their build process, free online compressors handle images one at a time and are fine for occasional uploads. The rule is the same either way: never upload a raw camera or stock photo directly to a live page. A two-minute optimisation step before publishing is the difference between a fast site and a sluggish one.

Lazy loading tells the browser to load images only when they are about to appear on screen, so a long page loads fast even with many pictures. It is built into modern browsers with a single attribute, and it is one of the easiest performance wins available. Apply it to every image below the first screen.

Finally, measure before and after with a free page speed tool. Record the total page weight and the loading time, then check again after optimising. Seeing a page drop from several megabytes to under one is satisfying, and it gives you a baseline to protect: add a size check to your publishing routine, and your site stays fast as it grows.

Modern browsers can choose the right image size automatically if you provide a few sizes and let the browser decide. Generate two or three versions of each important image, a small one for phones, a medium one for tablets and laptops, and a large one for wide screens, and the browser will download only the one it needs. The setup takes an afternoon and the savings apply to every visitor.

For decorative images that add little value, consider whether they are needed at all. A page with fewer, better-chosen images loads faster and often looks cleaner than a page crowded with stock photos. Optimisation is not only about compressing what you have; it is also about questioning whether each image earns its bytes, and removing the ones that do not.
