Nothing destroys trust faster than users discovering an outage before you announce it. A status page fixes that: one public page where anyone can see whether your services are up, what is affected, and when you expect a fix. Setting one up used to mean building a page yourself or paying for a service. Today several free tools do it well, and you can have a credible status page live in an afternoon.

Start by picking a tool that fits your scale. Uptime Kuma, run on your own server, includes unlimited status pages for free and is the best choice if you already self-host monitoring. Instatus offers a free plan with a hosted status page and a generous monitor allowance, and it suits teams that want zero maintenance. Better Stack's free tier includes one status page alongside its monitoring, which is convenient if you already use it for uptime checks. OpenStatus and similar open-source options give you a hosted page with a modern design. All of them let you customise the page with your logo and colours, which matters more than it sounds: a status page that looks like your product is trusted more than a generic one.

Next, list your services the way users think about them, not the way your infrastructure is organised. Users care about 'website,' 'login,' and 'checkout,' not about individual containers or database clusters. Group related components under those names, and keep the list short: five to eight services is plenty. A page with forty components impresses nobody and confuses everyone during an incident, when clarity matters most.

Then write a short incident process before you need it. Decide who can declare an incident, what the first update should say, and how often updates follow. A good first update is honest and short: what is affected, what you know so far, and when the next update will come. Users forgive outages far more readily than silence, and a status page with regular updates, even when the news is 'still investigating,' keeps support messages down dramatically.

Finally, link the status page everywhere users look during an outage: your website footer, your help pages, and your support auto-replies. A status page nobody can find is a page that does not exist. Also add a way for users to subscribe to updates by email or feed, so the next incident reaches them without them having to check. Test the whole flow once with a fake maintenance notice, so the first real incident is not the first time you use the tool.

A status page is one of the cheapest trust-building tools a startup can own. It costs an afternoon to set up, nothing on a free tier, and it pays off the first time something breaks, which it will. Build it now, while things are calm, and your users will never have to wonder whether you know about the problem. They will already be reading your update.

A status page process that has never been tested will wobble during a real incident, when stress is high and decisions are rushed. Run a game day: pick a quiet hour, simulate an outage, and walk through the process end to end. Who declares the incident, who writes the first update, who talks to users, and who decides the incident is over? Write down what felt slow or unclear, and fix it while things are calm. One rehearsal teaches more than ten pages of documentation.

Also review past incidents honestly. After each real outage, update the status page wording, the service list, and the process based on what actually happened. Did users ask about a service you had not listed? Add it. Did an update go out late because nobody knew who could post? Name that person. A status page improves with every incident, but only if someone takes ten minutes afterwards to write down what should change. The best status pages are not built in an afternoon; they are refined over a year of small, honest improvements.
